The Luther Whitman cellar hole (lot 36) built some time between. 1812 - 1815 .
It boasted 4 fireplaces ( 2 above and 2 below), parlor walls painted with various landscape
designs by a
traveling artist and intricate woodworking details. The buildings burned
July 4, 1946 - the cause an oil burner.
Luther Whitman - Birth Date: May 5, 1778 Known around town as Doctor Whitman. According to the journal of Herbert J. Libby
he acquired this name by trading a cow
with Dr. Peter Brooks for one of his medical books
and probably studied with him. Dr. Peter Brooks was a quite famous "root and herb" doctor.
